The author conveys the message by  using spiritual figures to mean never judge a book by its color.

"The devil comes to Tetiyette as a nice young man dressed in a well looked suit" pg. 2 with evil intention of trying to eat her soul. this is an example of personification and hyperbole (Tetiyette and the Devil pg.2).  This is symbolic of how the devil can transform himself into an angel of light according to the bible. 

The purpose is for young girls in Guadeloupe to listen to their parents, think twice before getting or having sexual intercourse with a man just based on how he looks.
